08.03.04 - The Dirty Things reviewed in the Sun-Times & Reader

Two great bands stopped by the studio to record live sets for WLUW's Radio One. J+J+J rocked out a totally awesome set. The Poweups (the side project of Justin and Angie from the Industry) played a short set of rockin' nintendo covers. Tune in this Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. or listen online here!!

I recorded 3 songs over the weekend for a new band featuring Brian and Mike of the Everglades. They don't have an offical name yet, but I think they're leaning towards Estes. If you like Jawbreaker and the Promise Ring, you're going to love these guys. We're going to finish this stuff up at the beginning of August.

Sean is finishing up the 6 song EP for Lucky 13 this week and last week, he finished mixing an EP for Forever and a Day. Both CDs should be available soon.

The Dirty Things new EP was reviewed by Jim DeRogatis in the July 23rd issue of the Chicago Sun-Times. That review went alittle something like this:

...The "new wave of new wave" continues to be strong in this town as well, and the Dirty Things are one of the better bands in this vein, drawing on the influences of Wire, the Gang of Four, and the early Cure on a five-song EP called "Movement Making Noises." On songs such as the aptly titled "New Dance," the young quartet easily betters the Rapture, if not bands like Franz Ferdinand and Clinic... You can read the whole review here.

The Dirty Things new EP was also reviewed by Monica Kendrick in the July 30th issue of the Chicago Reader. Here's what the reader had to say about "Movement Making Noises":

...This local quartet's new debut EP, "Movement Making Noises" (52 Girls), is icy 80s postpunk right down to the cover art-spiky and jittery and wired, with springy guitars and uneasy rhythms, it's rock 'n' roll to get the shakes to. "Cut and Dry" is two minutes and 45 seconds of strung out nervous energy, like a muscle tic that just won't stop.

The August schedule is quickly filling up here at BLAM. And we want to make sure we have the time to record your band. So please make sure to book your time in advance. Call or email us for available dates.

Sean and I are going to be doing a live recording this Friday at the Old Town School of Folk Music for Bloodshot Records recording artist Neko Case. It should be alot of fun!!

Sean finished mixing a bunch of songs for Grupo Cha Cha yesterday. These songs were tracked at Delmark. Overdubs and Mixdown took place at BLAM.

Two great bands stopped by the studio Friday night to record live sets for WLUW's Radio Free Chicago. Both sets will air this Thursday night at 7:00. Tune in and listen online here.

I've posted 2 new mp3s. One is an unmastered version of the song "Adios" performed by Yves Franscois et Rocambu Jazz. The other is a song recorded last year by a band called When She Falls. These guys are coming in at the end of the month, so I'm sure you'll be hearing more about them.

I mastered 2 records last month for Delmark Records. The first was a live recording at the Harold Washington Library by Vibraphonist Duane Thamm. The other record was for Kalaparush and the Light. These 2 albums are currently being pressed and should be available in February.
